Higher Education Advocate Team
A major aim of Riverside College Halton is to offer full support to any student wishing to progress into Higher Education. As part of Halton Borough Council's ESF 'Progression to HE' project, Higher Education Advocates are based within Riverside College Halton to offer expert help and advice on any issue surrounding HE and University.
Our advocate team knows everything there is about going to University. They are here to help with UCAS applications, organise trips to HE institutions and run activities within college to get students thinking about going to University. They are also available on a one-to-one basis if any student is unsure about whether they want to go to university or have specific worries such as student finance or choosing the right course.
The team has helped many students achieve the university place of their dreams and have run fantastic activities such as a 'Money Matters' student finance event at Halton Stadium and an overnight residential conference for 130 students from across Halton at Lancaster University. The trip to Lancaster University was a fantastic success with many students commenting that their eyes had really been opened as to what life at university was really like. "I've been working as a teacher for the last 14 years for a company called Deafness Support Network. Due to new legislation you now have to have a teaching qualification, to continue in my job role you now have to have a teaching qualification by 2010.
The course is great and the tutor support is excellent because I am a profoundly deaf and BSL user, the college provides me with an interpreter, to give me any additional support I need.
I thought the course would be boring as I have been teaching for so long but there are so many things I've learnt over the past year, it's been tough but the end is in sight."
