Hi-Tech staff increase productivity

Employees of a St Helens steel company are celebrating the achievement of their NVQ Level 2 certificates in Business Improvement Techniques thanks to a partnership with Riverside College’s Skills and Enterprise Team.

Six members of staff from the Hi-Tech Steel Services located on the Bold Heath Industrial Estate in St Helens, undertook the programme whilst at work. The company is a large independent steel stockholder and processor of mild steel strip mill products to industry and is a progressively growing company.

Andy Flatt Project Manager at Hi-Tech Steel Services said: “We are extremely proud that the team has achieved their level 2 NVQ, the staff have applied their training to the production line and have actually saved the company money, in particular the workplace organisation training has been adopted throughout plant with the use of '5s' check sheets. This has certainly enhanced the level of productivity the staff provides and we plan to continue this successful relationship with the college in the future.”

Lynda Duffy, training advisor with skills and enterprise team, who has previously delivered the course to Jaguar Motors and Saffil Ltd said: “The company has a very positive attitude towards the importance and benefits of gaining qualifications for their workforce. The students themselves have done really well, their enthusiasm and hard work is reflected in the quality of the portfolios that they put together and they recognised from the start the long term benefits with their job security.”
