Merseyside college touch success
14/06/2010Cronton Sixth Form College in Widnes held the first ever Merseyside College touch competition on Wednesday 26 May.
The competition brought together colleges from across Merseyside to compete for what will now be an annual competition. The competition was played in a league format with each team playing against the others, the eventual top two teams in the league played off in one final game to decide the overall champions. St Helens College won a tough final against Cronton Sixth Form College A Team, after both having played through a strong opposition from six colleges who took part in the competition.
The colleges that took part in the competition were:
Cronton Sixth Form College, St Helens College, Wirral Met College, Liverpool Community College, Knowsley College and Roby Sixth Form College.
The RFL League for all Officer Shane Eccles said: “The competition is a new event that has been created by working with the network of FESCO’s in the Merseyside area; the colleges were all offered taster sessions to prepare for the competition and some of the players had never touched a rugby ball before the taster sessions.
“Although as seems to be the case with most people once they start to play touch and the realise the speed and skill required to play the game they were hooked, I would like to say a big thank you to Contron Sixth Form College for hosting the event and also to the Rugby Academy players for officiating the games”.
Were now looking at making this an annual event and hopefully each year the interest and involvement will go from strength to strength.
Mark Brennan from Cronton Sixth Form College said: “It has been a great opportunity for the students to play in a competition against other local colleges, the students thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon and are looking forward to taking part in the festival again next year.”
