What is this course about?
The preparation of different surfaces and substrates, the application of different types of finishes and the communication skills required to work with others in the workplace.

Our team of lecturers are highly experienced in all types of decorating and have a wealth of knowledge to pass on to our students. Riverside College has developed a partnership with the Bell Group to launch the North West’s only ‘Bell Decorating Academy’. This partnership will offer students opportunities including specialised masterclasses by Bell Group tradesmen, work experience placements, apprenticeships and specialist equipment and materials to aid lessons.
What will I learn on this course?
The course will cover the following topics: Safe Working Practices, Information, Quantities and Communication with Others, Building Methods and Construction, Erect and dismantle working platforms, prepare surfaces, applying paint systems by brush and roller, apply foundation and plain papers, produce specialist decorative finishes. The practical work you will undertake will prepare you for real life situations. You will complete out of college projects designed to support the community and allow you to gain valuable experience on site.
You will need to have at least 4 GCSE’s grades 9 – 2 GCSE’s, including Maths and English Language.
What will this course lead on to?
The successful completion of this Painting and Decorating course could lead to a possible apprenticeship programme. During the course all learners are encouraged to gain work experience in order to make the transition to the workplace as smooth as possible.
The College has a full enrichment programme, and all learners are expected to make the most of their time with us, why not enjoy your free time with your tutor group. New enrichment activities include various sports tournaments, table tennis, X-Box competitions, remote control model racing. There will also be various trips and visits throughout the year.
How will I be assessed?
Assessments are carried out on all practical tasks throughout the year. Each practical task will result in a pass, merit or distinction grade depending on the quality of your work produced. You will also be assessed through online and paper exams at the end of each theory unit.
Any additional costs?
You will need to purchase safety clothing to work in your practical lessons, which consists of: Riverside College Hi Vis Polo T-shirt, Bib and brace Overalls, safety boots, writing equipment and a ring binder with note paper. You will also be asked to purchase a Hamilton Acorn 7-piece brush kit for your course.
