Riverside Students are National Football Champions
Riverside College students are the winners of the Moderate Learning Difficulties five a-side National Football Championship 2012.
Having been undefeated throughout the regional tournaments, the five a-side football team went on to represent the Northwest at this weekend’s National Event held in Bath.
The 12 man squad is made up of students who are currently studying on the Foundation Studies course at Riverside College, which is designed to promote independence and develop work skills for young people with learning disabilities.
The team played seven games and continued, with a show of strength to remain undefeated to reach the final against the West Midlands. In a nail biting match, which ended in a 2-2 draw, the team went on to win 3-1 on penalties. In total the team scored over 50 goals throughout the weekend.
Phil Haden, Head Coach for the team and a Riverside college tutor, from St Helens stated, “I am so proud of the team. Everyone worked together to produce a fantastic result. The boys were a credit to Riverside College, Halton Borough and the whole of the Northwest. They played with great enthusiasm and passion.”
