Riverside Students Compete in Annual Media Make-Up and Hairdressing Competition

This week students at Riverside College had the fantastic opportunity to test their creative skills in front of judges at the annual College Media Make-Up and Hairdressing Competition. The event took place in Centre Stage at the College with students’ family and friends in attendance.
The competition allowed the students to show off their talents in various themed categories such as Photographic Cover of a Magazine, Front Cover of a Magazine, Total Look, Bridal Wear and Creative Fantasy.
The event was judged by three respected hairdressing veterans from the local area; Darren Tyrer who owns a salon in Cronton and has 28 years’ experience in the industry, Jonathan Hunt who owns Widnes hairdressing salon Panache and has 43 years hairdressing experience and Moira Witter whose 43 year hairdressing and tutoring career has included working at Panache, Herbert of Liverpool and Riverside College.

Creative Fantasy winner Mia Hogan from the Level 3 Diploma in Hairdressing said “I can’t believe it; I’ve never won anything in my life before so I’m made up! It’s been very stressful preparing for the event but it’s paid off and I couldn’t be happier!”
“My cousin Maeghan Garret helped me by volunteering as my project model and I chose a ‘space odyssey’ theme for the entry. I’m really proud to have impressed the judges with my work.”
“The course has been amazing and this has given me a lot of confidence for the future, after I finish the course I’m considering a career in teaching or applying with Steiner to work on their cruise ships.”
Darren Tyrer said “I was impressed with the variety of different skills and techniques shown and the overall high standard from the competitors.”
Jonathan Hunt said “I was really impressed with the fantasy category; I can see a great future for them in hairdressing. We really enjoy coming to the college and seeing staff and students, it was a great day.”
Moira Witter said “We had a wonderful day; I was impressed with the high standards and really enjoyed taking part in it all.”
