Advanced Industry Engineering – Level 3 Diploma

What is this course about?
This course is designed to give you the knowledge and understanding of the principles and practical skills needed for a career in a broad range of engineering fields. The course provides an ideal opportunity for learners without relevant experience to develop the necessary skills and underpinning knowledge to progress to an apprenticeship in engineering. The course content will focus on the essential skills needed of engineering craftsmen and technicians e.g., health and safety, hand fitting techniques, welding, maintenance, and advanced machining techniques.

What will I learn on this course?
You will learn how to work safely and competently in an engineering environment and develop skills in workshop practices to allow you to progress into industry or to an apprenticeship. You will also have Career development sessions which will involve 1 to 1 discussion with your personal tutor to monitor your progress and support you during your course. On completion of the course, you will be able to confidently operate a lathe, MIG & TIG welding set, produce advanced parts from metals using hand tools & maintain various mechanical and electrical systems.

Entry requirements:
4 GCSE’s at grades 9 – 4 including Science, English Language, and Maths.

What will this course lead on to?
The course is designed to allow students to progress to an engineering apprenticeship or directly in the engineering industry in their chosen field. There are also opportunities to progress even further by enrolling on the HNC course or to explore university.

Enrichment Opportunities:
You will have an opportunity to take part in a range of enrichment activities such as 5-a-side football, practical projects, etc, together with educational visits to engineering companies such as Jaguar Land Rover and Fiddlers Ferry Power Station.

How will I be assessed?
You will produce a portfolio of evidence that you can keep and will support you during your job applications. Most of your course is practical, meaning you will be physically making or fixing things that you will keep as evidence. You will also complete a mandatory health and safety exam.

Any additional costs?
A Course kit list will be provided, this briefly consists of Personal Protective Equipment: College polo shirts, boots, overalls, and eye protection, with the option of purchasing your own welding helmet. Stationary is also required for your studies, including pens, paper and notepads.
