Vocational Students Celebrated at End of Year Awards Ceremony

Riverside College and Cronton Sixth Form College came together for the annual ‘Vocational Student of the Year Awards’ which celebrates the outstanding achievements over the past 12 months of vocational course students.

Awards were presented on the night by senior college staff and guests who included college governors Professor Susan Smith and Councillor Tom McInerney. The overall award winners were presented by The Worshipful the Mayor of Halton Councillor Alan Lowe and Mark Shotton who represented the Alan Carr Shotton Memorial Trust.

The awards celebrated the wonderful achievements of students from each curriculum area at both colleges. Special recognition went to three students who took home overall student of the year awards:

Access to Higher Education student Joanne Box, from Widnes, was awarded ‘Overall Adult Vocational Student of the Year’. Joanne was selected after displaying positivity and commitment to her studies this year, having excelled in all her assignments. She had 100% attendance and showed compassion and consideration to other students on the course. Joanne will be progressing to Hope University to study a Degree in Psychology.

Sport student Savannah Sumner took home the ‘Overall Vocational Cronton Student of the Year’ award after maintaining excellent standards throughout her time at college. Savannah has clear aspirations for her future and aims to become a PE teacher. She has representing the college in football and rugby and represented the Northwest region at the AOC Nationals playing Rugby Union. Savannah is progressing to Edge Hill University to study physical education.

Engineering student Ryan Grey, from Warrington, was awarded ‘Overall Riverside Vocational Student of the Year’. Ryan has been one of the most conscientious, hardworking and polite students that staff have had the pleasure of working with. He has achieved Level 2 and 3 Engineering qualifications, has been a student representative, and is currently due to complete his Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award. Ryan has secured an advanced apprenticeship with J.E.T Engineering.

Principal Mary Murphy said “This year’s awards ceremony has been incredible. It is very important to celebrate the truly outstanding and inspiring efforts of our vocational students during their time with us. We wish them every success as they now progress on to Higher Education and begin promising careers.”

Guests were entertained throughout the ceremony with musical performances by the talented students from the Centre of Excellence for Performing Arts. The students performed songs from their previous show Les Misérables, and gave a sneak preview of their upcoming production, Little Shop of Horrors which takes place at Riverside College on July 6th & 7th.
