What is this course about?
This course is an excellent steppingstone into your future career in IT. During this course you will study a variety of skills to enhance your knowledge and skills and prepare you for studies at a higher level and skills needed in the workplace.
You will learn how to set up and maintain computer systems and be able to carry out day-to-day tasks for safely installing hardware. You will also complete practical projects that cover the creative side of IT, including editing and creating digital graphics using Photoshop and Illustrator and developing your own website that includes a portfolio of your best work.
You will develop skills important to any workplace by designing and creating systems using Excel and Access. You will also develop your wider knowledge of the industry and emerging technologies when studying The Online World and Technology Systems.
What will I learn on the course?
You will learn new skills in a variety of office software, including creating spreadsheets in Excel and developing databases in Access. You will also examine the benefits and risks to upgrading computers and be able to complete hardware and software upgrades.
You will have the opportunity to discover different design concepts that can be used in your own work to produce professional digital graphics in Photoshop and Illustrator; you will enhance these further by learning to make your own web portfolio to display your work to others.
In The Online World and Technology Systems you will learn about the constantly evolving landscape of working in IT and be introduced to topics including networks, programming, cloud and cyber security.
Everything you complete on this course prepares you well to continue onto the Level 3 IT course, or another subject area through the different academic skills you will have developed, such as working with others, academic writing and exam skills.
Entry Requirements:
A minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade 9 – 3 including English Language and Maths.
What will this course lead on to?
Successful completion of this Information and Creative Technology course could lead to the Level 3 Extended Diploma in IT or Multimedia Computing. You will also be prepared to apply for a range of different apprenticeships including Infrastructure Technician and Digital Marketer.
The qualification prepares you for employment in the IT industry, with opportunities such as:

- Enrichment Opportunities
There are a variety of Enrichment activities that you can get involved in ran by the team including; competing in local and national competitions such as the Bebras Computing Challenge, Cyber Discovery and Cyber Centurion and also other academic enrichment activities including access to Cisco IT Essentials, Cisco CCNA and Adobe Certified Associate exams. We also run enrichment activities including Virtual Reality Club and Missing Map Mapathons.
Our students also enhance their studies by taking part in different trips including: EGX – UK’s largest computer game convention, National Media Museum and Bletchley Park – the home of the codebreakers. We also organise international trips with our most recent one being to Disneyland Paris for Computing Live!
How will I be assessed?
Most of the units are internally assessed using assignments that combine practical work and assessing your understanding of topics using reports and presentations. You will also have two externally assessed units that are completed on a computer for The Online World and Technology Systems.
Any additional costs?
Standard course materials such as, pen, pencil, and paper will be needed. All students will have their own OneDrive cloud storage that will allow them to access work outside of the classroom. We use the most current software used in industry, but we ensure students will have access this for free when working from home. You will be required to pay for trips and visits.
