What is this course about?
The course will cover the following topics: Health, safety and welfare in construction, Principles of building construction, information and communication, Erecting and dismantling access equipment and working platforms, Preparing surfaces for decoration, Applying paint systems by brush and roller to complex areas, Applying standard papers to walls and ceilings, Producing specialist finishes for decorative work, Creating and applying colour. The practical work you will undertake will prepare you for real life situations. You will complete out of college projects designed to support the community and allow you to gain valuable experience on site.

We are associated with Dulux and held the regional heat of the Dulux young apprentice of the year competition, which is the biggest heat in England. Our team of lecturers are experienced in all types of decorating and have a wealth of knowledge to pass on to our learners.
Age 16/18: You require four GCSE’s Grade 9 –3 including maths and English language. Or the completion of a Level 1 Diploma in painting and decorating.
Age 19+: You require A*- D (9 – 3) GCSE English and maths / Level 1 English and maths qualification or working at L1 in English and maths on our assessment.
What will this course lead on to?
The successful completion of this course could lead to a Level 3 Diploma or possible apprenticeship programme. During the course all learners are encouraged to gain work experience in order to make the transition to the workplace as smooth as possible.
What will I learn on this course?
The preparation of different surfaces and substrates, the application of different types of finishes and the communication skills required to work with others in the workplace. Apply wallpaper to a ceiling, chimney breast, feature wall and window wall, Create various decorative finishes including marble, wood grain and stencils, learn the theory behind colour and demonstrate how to mix colours. Apply paint using the correct techniques – doors, windows, ceilings, and walls.
New enrichment activities include; sport tournaments, table tennis, x-Box competitions, remote control model racing and mini caravan building.
How will I be assessed?
At the end of the course each learner has to complete a practical assessment to prove their skills in order to achieve the full qualification.
Are there any costs associated with this course?
Each learner will require a Riverside College Hi Vis Polo T-shirt, Bib and brace Overalls, safety boots, writing equipment and a ring binder with note paper. Each learner will be asked to purchase a Hamilton Acorn 7 piece brush kit to enable them to progress during the course, This will be explained in the College induction.
